Careto’s House

The Careto’s House (Casa do Careto) is a multifunctional space, where we can find the records of the Carnival tradition of Podence, as well as the mysticism associated to the Caretos, represented in the canvas of the painters Graça Morais and Balbina Mendes and in the photographs of António Pinto and Francisco Salgueiro.

We can also find some publications, facts, cattle bells, masks and all the costumes of these enigmatic and charming characters. We can even find the only beings who the Caretos respect in their mischief, screaming and jingling in Carnival Sunday and Tuesday – the marafonas.
In the Careto's House, inaugurated on February 22nd, 2004, there is also a traditional ‘tasquinha’ where one can enjoy the local products of Podence.
